13. Some Final Cleanup of Those Pesky Undead

Posted on August 14, 2014January 20, 2024 by Brianna

The session started with the group looking into the small room beyond the locked door, then deciding to take another look at the room with the two empty pools. Danicia and Cendrine checked the walls for secret doors but didn't find anything. Cendrine also went down into each pool to check for secret doors but did not find anything. Darsus looked over the murals and tried to recall those long ago memories of religion classes he took as a young cleric wanna be. He had a memory of a cult of evil worshippers of a toad like frog that would depict giant man-toad beings in their murals.

n

After a thorough look at the room with the pools, the group went and unlocked the second door and found another larger room. This room had the remains of bars at one end and a large, toad like statue in a pool at the other end. The bars were partially covered by a landslide that had blocked off the room from some other area. Danicia looked over the room and found no traps on the floor or bars but found three traps on the statue. Darsus then remembered that the rituals of the toad god, Bobugbubilz, involved a sacrifice that would try to get away from giant toads. The status would have traps that would activate if the sacrifice tried to escape by climbing the statue. In this case the tongue of the statue was trapped to fire a javelin, another trap would fire off a Sepia Snake SIgil trap and the final trap was a Glyph of Warding. Danicia carefully backed away from the front of the statue and marked out an area for the rest of the party to avoid.

n

In the meantime, Cendrine was looking for secret doors and found one directly behind the statue. She also noticed bones in the pool of the statue and pointed them out to the party. Danicia came over and agreed to open up the door and the rest of the party prepared for whatever might come out. When the door was opened a skeleton attempted to charge out and was stopped by Cendrine. ANother skeleton then attempted to charge through the first, failed and was stuck in the square directly in front of the door. Another undead creature could be made out in the small room behind the door.

n

Battle ensued, and Cendrine struck at the first skeleton. Danicia attempted an arrow shot and missed, while Sheliak also struck at the front skeleton. Darsus said a prayer and then the skeletons attempted to attack again, with no success. Danicia then decided to tumble into the room to get a flank while Cendrine whomped on the front skeleton.

n

Unfortuately, when Danicia tumbled in, she found out that the third undead just wanted to touch her in a special way and she ended up paralyzed. Sheliak had followed Danicia into the room and knew to avoid the 3rd undead creature when he saw Danicia frozen in place. Cendrine, Darsus and Sheliak worked to clear out the two skeletons so they could get into the room and help out with the third undead creature. Although the creature managed an attack on Sheliak, he was not paralyzed and once the two skeletons were taken care of, the undead creature was quickly taken down. Darsus looked Danicia over and realized it would be several minutes before she would recover so used a scroll to bring her out of the paralysis. Once recovered Danicia quickly looked around and found gems and more toad eggs hidden away in the room. The eggs were destroyed in order to avoid more toad creatures being created.

n

After taking the treasure, the group went back out and noticed the skeleton had a tabard with a symbol of Iomedae on it. It was decided they would let the temple of Iomedae in Cillamar know about this room. The group then left and after a quick look around the caverns confirmed that all of the trogs, toads and ants were dead and the sheep and cows around Cillamar would be safe from this threat. The Storm Peace Keepers headed back into town and reported to their friend Brian in the town guard that they had cleared out the cavern.

n

Darsus also visited the temple of Iomedae and let them know about the chapel they had found. An older cleric at the temple was interested in the story and told of a landslide that had happened up on the mountain about 30 years ago. It happened shortly after a group of Paladins of Iomedae had been killed in an area of Castle Whiterock while on a secret misson for the temple. One of the Paladins, Benden Talbusk, had not been found with the other bodies and there were signs he had been dragged off, alive, after the other Paladins had been killed. The clerics of Iomedae could sense that their goddess was very angry and felt their was some connection with the landslide that occurred shortly after. The older cleric wonders if the goddess took vengeance for the Paladins and if the skeleton might be the missing Paladin from the group.

n

The next day, at breakfast time, Danicia felt ill and felt week and clumsy (Dex and Con loss). Darsus became concerned and looked her over and found what looked like an infected bite from the encounter the day before. After consulting with the Temple of Cayden, it was found that Danicia had a disease, Ghoul Fever, from the bite she received. She was quickly cured and restored to full health once the clerics knew what was ailing her.

n

After their adventure in the caverns, the group found that had new skills and felt more experienced. They spent the next week (10 days) in Cillamar getting comfortable with their new skills, feats and spells. Partway through they went to visit the tavern of SIgn of the Drunken Minotaur. There was some new help in the bar who didn't recognize them but once the owner, Micah, saw them, the Storm Peace Keepers were treated to a free meal and free drinks. MIcah remembered their rescue of his son and the joy that had returned when his son was returned to him.

n

While enjoying the music of the bards and toasting the health of Cayden, their friend Brian came in. He chatted with them for a while then mentioned that there was another spot of trouble that the group might be interested in investigating. Over the last year it had been noticed that caravans were misplacing people and animals as they came into Cillamar from the south. The disappearances didn't happen with every caravan but they all happened around the same area, by a swampy area that was next to the road. Guards from the caravans had investigated and found tracks but they led into the swamp and disappeared in the muck and mud. A week before a caravan had been approaching and camped across from the swampy area. The next day an older man did not show up and his tracks were found leading into the swamp and disappearing.

n

The guard was busy with other things, like guarding the town from raids on farms and didn't have enough men to go out and investigate. The people who had disappeared were not from Cillamar so there wasn't any family pushing for them to be found. Brian thought the Storm Peace Keepers might be interested in looking around to see if they could find something that others had missed. The group discussed this and agreed that they could take some time to go and check it out. They did ask for a guide to the area and Brian said one of the caravan guards could help them out when they were ready.

n

The group then completed their business of training and re-equipping themselves with gold from their finds. After a few more days they found Brian and planned to head out and see if they could find anyting in the swamps south of Cillamar. Here the session ended.
