52. Just Swinging in the Chains

Posted on February 2, 2026February 2, 2026 by Brianna

The session started with the group assessing their damage from the battle with the destrachans. While Darsus healed the party, Sandru scouted ahead to check for danger the way further down into the dungeon. He reported back that there were not traps, the steps and water were intended to cause difficulties for the party moving forward. Since all of the group still had the ability to fly or walk through the air, they were in no danger of slipping for injury or possible death.

With the group healed up, they moved to the west end of the rough cavern. Cendrine looked in disdain at the rough stonework, low quality and simply hacked out of the earth. Sandru and Danicia floated down the tunnel towards the next room. Danicia was the first to see the floor below, which appeared to be a watery, boggy mess. Sandru and Danicia could also hear groans and screams of pain from the chamber ahead of them. Sandru carefully peaked around the corner of the tunnel. He could see cages with humans in them and two ja noi oni standing near two of the cages at the east end of the room. Danicia became invisible and flew ahead to check the room and one of the cages. With Seoni helping, the group quietly shared the information and prepared to attack the two ja noi. However, once they appeared in the room, both of the ja noi flew to the east of the room and down into another tunnel.

They looked around the room and Darsus took a long look at one of the cages and it’s inhabitant. He could see that the prisoners had been tortured for a great deal of time and that all of them had retreated into their own worlds. The group decided to leave these tortured souls and help them on their way out. They thought the kami might be able to help them recover from their extreme ordeal.

Sandru and Danicia moved to the eastern exit and the rest of the group followed them. This tunnel did not go down as far and they could see the floor, again covered with a boggy mix of water and other things. Part of what they saw was a mix of rotted body parts floating in the water, creating a opaque covering over anything hiding in the bog. They moved down to just the ceiling level and Sandru peeked around the corner and saw their two foes. He also saw horrific scenes carved into the walls and had to ignore his feelings of disgust so he was not sickened by it. Although he warned the group of the horrific murals on the walls, each member of the party had to willfully push down their disgust to not also be sickened by the scenes.

The ja noi showed no awareness of the group so Sandru, Danicia, Sheliak and Cendrine quickly moved into position around one of the enemies. Darsus had offered to use his magic rope to entangle one, but the front liners chose to move forward. Seoni and Darsus stayed back and readied themselves for action. Cendrine was able to attack the ja noi but a fireball struck the group before the rest could act. The fireball included the ja noi and caused a lot of damage to those who were attacking. A fiendish constrictor crawled up on one of the islands in the bog, ready to attack if one of the party got too close.

In spite of the attack, Sandru, Danicia and Sheliak were able to attack the ja noi can cause a great deal of damage. Darsus was still at the back but he felt a strange compulsion to leave the room start to come over him. He was able to shake it off and continue on. Seoni realized there was a caster and moved to watch for a spell that was cast. However, she was unable to see anything in the room for the direction. She realized that the creature was probably hiding in the waters of the bog.

The ja noi attacked Sandru and moved out of the flanks. The other ja noi moved in and also attacked Sandru. They were able to hit and do some damage to him. Darsus helped with healing because of the damage from the fireball. After Cendrine attacked, another fireball struck the group, including the ja noi. The one that had been surrounded finally was dropped while the other continued attacks. Seoni was finally able to perceive a shape in the water and cast fairy fire on the location. A large creature could be partly seen in the water, with mulitple shimmering shapes moving around it.

The other ja noi was also taken down and the group moved to focus on the strange creature in the water. They moved into attack but could not find the creature to hit it because of the shapes. They were able to reduce the number of images when the creature moved away. Once it had moved it cast another spell and appeared to become a bit healthier looking. Seoni fire magic missiles at it, hoping to destroy all of the images. While partially successful, her luck was with her and she also struck the creature several times. The images had been reduced to one image when she moved and cast another spell. More images popped up and the group had to again chop through the images to find the creature.

During the attacks on this creature, Seoni started feeling compulsions to leave the room or to laugh uncontrollably. She was able to fight them off and realized there was another caster in the room. While casting magic miissiles to destroy images on the outlined creature, she also looked around the room. She finally detected a shadowy shape in the water and again cast fairy fire on it. An almost twin of the creature appeared in the water.

The fighters finished with the other creature and moved to the now lit up creature on the other side. While they quickly took her down, the creature did manage to curse Danicia before the final blow was struck. Darsus had prepared scrolls for situations like this and a remove curse got Danicia back to normal.

With all of the creatures dead in this room, Sandru scouted ahead while Darsus healed the party. He spied a Tian human standing on the floor of the next room, dressed like a diplomat, watching the tunnel they would need to use. As the party gathered at the tunnel and prepared to enter, they heard a voice from the human. It praised their expertise as it welcome them to Minkai. It told them the Withered Blossom pagoda was no business of theirs and they should leave or face horrible, torturous deaths if they stayed. If they did leave Munasukaru would promise to provide them with any earthly pleasure they might desire once the storm had been broken by her lover Anamurumon.

When the group heard this, they spoke words that sounded like they would leave but instead they gathered together so Darsus and Seoni could transport them into the next room. The human was no longer there in the room, there was a large creature that was ready to do battle. They had surrounded him and damaged him. However, he turned invisible and Sandru could see him moving to the other side of the room. Sandru could also see that he cast a spell and changed into a gaseous form of himself.

The room was covered with chains and there were two kytons who made use of the chains as weapons. However, they were unable to strike the group. The fighters moved in on the kytons. Seoni removed a set of drums from her pack and started playing them. The group not affected by them and the kytons were able to shrug them off. In the corner of his eye Sandru could see the invisible being move quickly and the gas moved through gaps in the door to another area.

With the large fighter gone, the fighters quickly took out the kytons. Darsus cast a flame strike on the but they were able to resist the spell. With the immediate battle ended the group glanced around the room. They found more cages and humans like the other room they had passed through. There were doors on the east end to another area. The session ended here.
