36. A Storm's Coming…

Posted on December 13, 2021January 20, 2024 by Brianna

Again the adventurers rode the platform up to the 3rd and final level of the tower. When they reached this level, they found a storm raging inside the tower, with strong winds blowing at them. At the top of the tower there was an opening which channeled the storm and six crystals which seemed to feed energy to the storm as it raged. Several large undead creatures were around the hut while a female creature with wings flew above them. Darsus was able to move freely due to his special abilities as a cleric of Cayden. The others found it more difficult and Sheliak would have been blown away if he had not been enlarged to a medium sized creature. Sandru was blown about while Seoni chose to fly. Danicia and Cendrin slowly moved out and started engaging the creatures.

Seoni and Darsus focused on the flying creature who hid herself in a bubble of darkness. Eventually the large creatures and the flying creature were taken out after many struggles to simply move in the strong winds. However, although all of the creatures were dead, the storm continued, the strong winds making it difficult for the group. After some discussion they realized that the crystals needed to be destroyed. Danicia found another crystal panel and found that the top opening could be closed, shutting the winds out of the chamber. Sandru air walked to the top of the chamber and use the adamantine light mace to slowly destroy all of the crystals. Danicia had been cursed while activating the crystal panel but Darsus was able to remove the curse. Everyone healed up and searched the level. They found items on the flying creature and a stash of items hidden in a corner. While looking at a magical cloak, Seoni realized it was an artifact made by the wizard Eziah. While it appeared to be a Robe of Useful items, this robe had an additional golden patch that showed for the wearer. When the wearer pulled on the golden patch and thought of a wondrous item, the golden patch would become that item. Once it was pulled the golden patch would no longer be there for that wearer. There is a limit to the patches but it appeared that there were enough gold patches with this cloak that each member of the party could get a wondrous item of their choice.

The Storm Peace Keepers made their way out of the tower and back to the caravan. The constant storms that had been gathering had disappeared. Ulf declared that it was safe to move forward and the group continued on their travels. For the next two months they continued, the days growing shorter as the start of winter grew closer. They made a stop for a few days in the small village of Ul-Angorn for a break from the unrelenting cold. While there, they hear of storms starting up, which sound like the morozko storms they thought they had ended at the towers. After a much needed break, they continue the final part of their journey over the top of the world.  After a month, they final see the Wall of Heaven mountains where the caravan will travel through the Altan Zuud pass to the lands of the Tian Xia. As they approach the pass, the temperature steadily drops and there are ominous storm clouds ahead. During the climb to the pass, they can see the storm clouds racing overhead, faster than the wind. They grow closer to the pass until one day the mountain peaks are hidden behind a blizzard and they see an avalanche cover up the pass. Some of the group hear feminine laughter mixed with peals of thunder from the storm. The morozko has returned, ready to sweep the land clean of anything living.

n

With the pass blocked, Ulf suggests making for an Erutaki town but he is not hopeful that the caravan will make it before the storm reaches them. The town is 200 miles to the east and they could possibly cross the gulf or take shelters in dwarven delves in order to stay safe from the storm. Koya offers another suggestion for the caravan. She had hear a story of Uqtaal clans, tundra nomads who worship Desna. These clans believed that souls followed the North Star to Desna, even in death and they built a burial place at the foot of the Wall of Heavens mountains. The crypts were in caverns called the Path of Spirits. This path cut through the mountains and was intended to guide the spirits to the top of the world and the North Star so Desna could carry them home. A traveler had told her this story and claimed he had found these caverns and traveled through them. The caverns were marked by twin statues of Desna and Koya felt that landmarks in the area indicated they were 30 miles west of them.

n

As the group sits with the caravan, hoping the weather will clear, the storm appears to grow larger and move closer to them. This is where the session ended.
