34. Storming the Tower or Does It Storm Us?

Posted on May 24, 2021January 20, 2024 by Brianna

The Storm Peace Keepers spent a week in Iqaliat to prepare for the next part of the journey. With the dragon vanquished, the village trusted the group and opened up what they had for the trip preparation. With a restock of supplies, the group set out on the next part of their journey over the high ice. During the first part of this journey, the group climbed in altitude and had to adjust to the increased elevation. After a month of travel, they were accustomed to the altitude. They also noticed the change of the sun as it gradually moved southward in the sky for the winter.

n

After several weeks, the group detected odd tremors on the trail. While investigating, a huge worm appeared underneath a horse and attempted to drag it off. The group surrounded it and distracted it from it's intended meal. As the worm chased one of them, others attacked. Eventually they killed the worm and kept the horses safe. They continued their travel, seeing another pile of bodies, which were located next to a strange, 20 foot high tower. The tower was featureless and a strange contrast in the bleak wilderness. Stoneshape was used to destroy the tower. The ground was too cold to bury the bodies, so a flame strike was used to cremate them and honor the dead.

n

The caravan continued moving and eventually started seeing a blue glow on the horizon ahead of them. As they moved closer, they could eventually make out a tower, hundreds of feet tall, with a blue glow centered at the top of it. As they moved closer, they could see many undead milling about on the plain before the tower. With some scouting, the group could tell the undead were very much like other undead they had fought earlier in their travels. They were undetected and made a plan to protect themselves while destroying these evil undead. Darsus spoke of the need to wipe them out and the others agreed.

n

The group moved out and Seoni placed a wall of ice to protect their backs. Darsus consecrated an area of ground while Helgavargel flew around to draw the undead after him. Slowly the undead follow the little Cassisian and gathered in a place not far from the group. When the group moved closer, the undead used a cone of cold to attack. However, the undead moved slowly and were easy to pick off one by one. Some frozen bison came close to threatening the group, but they were also destroyed before they could get close enough to damage anyone. Sandru and Danicia were able to move around the air, while Sheliak could tumble out of the way. Cendrine simply stood and attacked and eventually all of the undead were scattered in pieces on the ice of the frozen area.

n

The group moved back to regroup and restore spells used in the battle. They then moved forward and found that the tower had wind blowing furiously around the outside. Seoni and Darsus detected magic and found that two spells were in the area. After some additional investigation, Darsus realized the area was unhallowed and had another spell associated with it. After some consultation and remembering some bits of information, Seoni and Darsus felt the other spell was a dispel magic. This was tested and confirmed. Darsus had a scroll of Dispel magic and was able to dispel the one part of the spell.

n

The group cautiously moved across the bridge when a humanoid being lifted up and attacked them with cold. Two others also appeared and attacked. Danicia moved around them, while Cendrine attacked. Sandru also moved, while Sheliak held onto Darsus while he moved across the bridge. The beings attacked and attempted to push Sandru and Danicia into the water. Sandru drifted over while Danicia was pushed into the black frost that surrounded the tower. She was slightly damaged by the acidic, cold slush and shook off some worse effect.

n

With the wind affecting them, it was decided to run into the tower, which seemed to be out of the wind. Cendrine ran in, where in spite of her Hide from Undead spell, she was detected. However, the attack failed. Sheliak pushed his way through and was able to follow her in. He was also detected but the attacks also failed. Seoni joined them and the group inside the tower found themselves surrounded by five undead.

n

Sandru was pushed back by the wind before he moved forward towards the tower. Darsus threw a rope to Danicia who used it to pull herself up the bridge and into the tower. Darsus kept the creatures from the slush distracted while the others attacked the undead in the tower. Once the undead were destroyed by fiery methods, the group turned to killing the other creatures outside. It did not take long for them to finish them off.

n

The group ventured into the tower and looked around. Darsus noticed a crystal panel outside of a central chamber. It was thought the panel might be a control panel of some kind, perhaps for some elevator type of mechanism to the top of the tower. Seoni reported that the central chamber had strong winds, like outside of the tower, blowing in the room. The group also noticed that the roof of the room rose up tens of feet above them, far higher than most rooms. It was estimated that the roof went up about 100 feet into the air.

n

Danicia and Sheliak had detected some danger in the two side rooms. Danicia had glimpsed a tangle of roots and leaves in the room to the NE while Sheliak had glimpsed mushrooms growing along the wall to the NW. There was one more room to the north of the central chamber, with that could be smelled as the wind in the center circled around. The group healed up and would plan for their next action.
