33. A Little Magic Here, A Lot More Dragon Over There

Posted on March 28, 2021January 20, 2024 by Brianna

The group prepared to explore the top of the cliff to try and find Tuanak. Darsus, Danicia and Sandru used magical means to go to the top. They quickly moved over the cliffs and the altar, but saw no sign of Tuanak. Meanwhile, the others slowly walked up the tunnel, checking for a sign of Tuanak. Partway up the passage, Cendrine detected unusual stone work in the wall. Sandru and Danicia searched and found a secret door. They unlocked it and prepared to open it after the others had moved away. Fortunately, Sandru and Danicia were flying as the floor fell away into the 50 foot deep pit with jagged spikes. Sandru and Danicia reset the trap and disabled it so everyone could cross safely.

n

On the other side, a tunnel wound up the cliff, curving about in the dim light of torches on the side of the walls. They cautiously moved upwards and eventually saw a man standing before a blank wall. He hailed them and explained that he was Naquun, a hunter from the village. He had seen Tuanak go through the wall and was guarding it. When the group explained their search, Naquun showed them where the opening was. When the door was opened, they told him he should head back to the village so he started his way down the path. Seoni stayed in the tunnel to guard, while the others prepared to enter the chamber on the other side of the secret door.

n

Sandru and Danicia entered, while Darsus prepared to take Cendrine in. Sheliak stayed at the ready with his bow while the others edged down the narrow path. The chamber was circular, with a slippery, narrow path on the walls. The center of the chamber was open and went down about 50 feet. As they moved forward, they detected undead, like the undead that attacked them by the undead mastodon. Sandru and Danicia looked to attack while Darsus and Cendrine teleported to a lower location for their attacks. As the group moved, a flame strike came down. They realized there was someone else in the chamber attacking with magic. Sheliak turned his bow at an area where they thought the attacker was while Darsus flew up to help. Sandru focused on attacking the undead while Danicia also helped out with the search.

n

With the flame strike, Naquun ran up to attack Seoni but she cast a wall of ice that kept him away from her. The others eventually figured out where the attacker was and gradually wore him down. The first view was of Tuanak, dead, appearing and slowly falling to the floor below. The undead were also destroyed while Seoni stood ready to keep Naquun out of the chamber. Sandru and Danicia went to help and flanked him. Seoni shouted that something was odd about him and to be careful, that Naquun appeared to not be acting completely on his own. After careful attacks, a demon popped out of Naquun as he slumped to the ground. The group quickly dispatched the demon and revived Naquun. He did not fully remember what had happened and was appalled at his possession. He made his way back to the other villagers while the group carefully made their way to the bottom of the chamber.

n

At the bottom of the chamber they found an altar of Sithud, the demon lord of blizzards, icy storms and the undead. They also fround dragon shells from a white dragon and drawings covering the walls around the alter. With the help of the chief and head woman, the drawings told a story of the morozkos, the almost living storms of the north, the Nameless spires where the wind spirits live and a blue skinned flying woman holding a symbol of Sithud like a scepter. Tuanak had made a pilgrimage to the Nameless Spires for guidance and it was after this trip that he seemed different.

n

With the find of the dragon shells, they felt that Tuanak had stolen the dragon eggs and that was why Vegsundvaag, the white dragon, had attacked the village. Seoni suggested trying to parley with the dragon and explain that they had killed the person who had stolen her eggs. The others were skeptical, but agreed to try this approach if they went to the dragon's lair. The group did decide to travel to the dragon and spent the rest of the day preparing for the trip.

n

After 3 days of travel, they reached the glacial rift of Vegsundvaag's lair. Darsus flew in and attempted to speak with her, but she clawed him through a wall of ice. He left and all of the group re-entered the lair. They found her chamber and she sent an icy blast at them. While this caused some damage, the group surrounded her and gradually wore her down. She shrieked about the two legs who had killed her children and that she would invoke revenge on all two legs for what they had done. After a few rounds, they killed her.

n

An investigation of other chambers found the rest of the shattered eggs and treasure from those less fortunate. They traveled back to the village and sat at a feast in their honor. While at the feast, the chief and head woman pulled them aside to tell them of new information they had from the runes and drawings in Tuanak's hidden chamber. The morozkos have been raging across the ice and ancient legends tell that they are the scourge that Sithud wields to obtain more undead to serve him. The drawings suggest that the woman in the pictures who was also winged, has found a way to wield that power, perhaps by using the strange black monoliths that have appeared or by using ancient magic in the Nameless Spires. The Nameless Spires are the remains of an ancient city located at the North Pole. They also saw mention of the Storm Tower, called that because of the storms that are always swirling above it. The Storm Tower is one of the Nameless Spires that dots the area around the North Pole, the remains of an ancient people who once lived there. The woman may be trying to use the ancient magic in the Storm Tower to control the morozkos storms and has already succeeded in awakening them. If she gains full control of the storms, no one will be able to cross over the crown of the world.

n

The group is welcome to stay in the village as long as they would like to prepare for the journey ahead. The next part of the journey will be slower and dangerous due to the storms. There will also be increased challenge due to the altitude, extreme cold and long days during the spring time. The session ended here.
