28. Mosquitos Are Bigger Than They Appear

Posted on March 13, 2018January 20, 2024 by Brianna

The session started with the group looking around the herd of lizards for possible dangers. While looking, they noticed that many of the lizards had old scars from stirges feeding on them. After a discussion, they decided to go to the wall where one stirge had disappeared in order to see if there were more of them. They decided that cleaning out a stirge lair would be sufficient battle to end the day before resting and tackling larger challenges the next day.

n

When examing the wall they saw an opening about 30 feet above them. Kaylord and Coravel climbed the wall to investigate, Aramil and Quis'Ari joined them once it looked safe. There was a stench of decay and stirge waste and Kaylord could see the cave went further into the wall and broke off into several tunnels. He went ahead and could see a larger room that was covered with stirges clinging to the walls. He went back to the group and they decided to see if they could burn out most of the stirges before proceeding.

n

Aramil set off a fireball and a detonation and many of the stirges were turned to ash. However, enough survived that three swarms of them attacked the group. The group was pushed back to the opening and Quis'Ari climbed down a few feet in order to avoid being drained of all of her blood. Kaylord, Coravel and Aramil were able to take down the swarms but at great cost. Fortunately, Quis'Ari had a wand of restoration and was able to repair the blood drain they had experienced.

n

As they went to explore the cavern, the proceeded cautiously. Down one tunnel they could see a huge, misshapen being that the stirges were flying around, including two more swarms. As stirges flew within reach, the creature would grab at them and pull them in so she could take in the blood they had drained from other creatures. The stench was not quite as bad but the group could see body parts strewn about the chamber.

n

After some discussion, the group setup two walls of fire in order to damage the swarms and try to protect themselves from being drained again. The fire did damage the swarms and the huge creature but not enough to prevent damage. Kaylord was pulled into a grapple and when he escaped, Quis'Ari was pulled in. Aramil and Coravel continued attacking and working to rescue Kaylord and then their cleric. Fortunately the creature dropped Quis'Ari before she was fully drained.

n

After taking a break to restore some hit points, the group was able to return to the battle and finish off the swarms and the huge creature. They found in the remains of other adventurers a few items that could help them on their way. They finished healing and climbed down to the lower level. They decided to explore the fungi forest before preparing to stop for the night. While traveling on a well worn path, they were stopped by a ghostly apparition. The incorporeal creature emitted an aura of evil and at her shriek, Kaylord, Aramil and Coravel took off running in fear. Quis'Ari was not afraid and stayed to take the measure of the creature. She could tell it was an incorporeal undead who was probably haunting the scene of her death. However, when the creature shrieked again, Quis'Ari was frightened and ran away in a panic.

n

After a few minutes, the group was able to join back together. Aramil was able to sneak back in and get his staff back that he had dropped in his flight of fright. The group decided it was time to take a break and rest for the night. They also felt that they were starting to understanding things and feeling that in the morning certain things would make more sense after the experience they had in this cavern. The session ended here.
