17. Castle Brinewall: A Fixer-Upper, View of the Ocean and Haunted by the Horror

Posted on March 29, 2016January 20, 2024 by Brianna

After the group made sure the hall was clear, they explored the room, which included a Detect Magic spell. They found a small room, with a bed and a small foot locker that was hidden beneath the bed, A careful search found the locker and the magic items in it. They also found that the area had been a shrine for Desna before it was despoiled by the serpent creatures. The group rested and meditated before continuing their exploration. After exploring, Sandru decided to go back to the caravan in order to make sure Sophia was still safe. The group felt that they could handle the dangers of the castle without a problem.

When they started exploring again, they went up the closest hallway. They carefully checked the rooms and found they were bedrooms in use by the current occupiers. The rooms were neatly kept and were probably the sleeping area for the family before the castle fell. One larger bedroom also contained a desk that was covered with parchment and paper. The papers were covered with scribbling in a messy Tien writing. While the Storm Peace Keepers could tell that the rooms were occupied, there was no one in the group of rooms they searched. They found a door to the outside which was blocked by a collapsed tower. They had seen the same area when they first started exploring the level. They continued down the hall and they could hear more of the serpent folk from a downstairs hallway. The group decided to continue exploring the upper hall before going downstairs. As they passed another door they could hear the sound of a child sobbing. They examined the door and found that it was stuck and the only way into the room was to break the door down. While they disliked leaving a possible prisoner behind, the group decided to continue with their exploring. Since the door was stuck, it seemed that the child should be safe while they continued looking through the castle.

They continued on and found more bedrooms but they were smaller and not in current use. They did find several skeletons that had been slashed by sharp weapons and no signs of skulls in the room. The group then cautiously entered a large room, with a large table in the center. There were plates and partially eaten food on the table but no one at the table. Some of the chairs were knocked over, as if someone had gotten up suddenly from the table. The group crossed the room and went into a room with two side rooms and stairs down. As they moved to the stairs, they could see that it looked like an old armory and guard room. They also noticed blood and gouges marring the walls. In one of the small rooms they found a secret door that led to the outside wall and stairs down to another room. They then went out and started towards the other stairs. As they did, the blood began to run on the wall and they could hear the shrieks of the dying. They felt a tinge of fear from the haunted energy but they were able to shake it off. They continued down the stairs to the lower level.

n

The stairs went into another guard room and then continued down to another level. There was more evidence of battles in this room, with old bloodstains and gashes in the wall. There was a thick layer of dust on the floor and the air was musty and weirdly cold. THey group moved towards the interior of the castle and started investigating one of the small rooms. They found a bedroom with a desk and a display for armor and weapons. All of the furniture had been smashed and there was a thick layer of dust on everything. The group moved in and found an undead creature, armored and with a sword. The group became alert and prepared for an attack. The creature started an attack on them and was eventually taken down.

n

The group continued exploring when they heard foot steps moving towards them. As they looked out of another room they could see more serpent folk and a flying humanoid waiting outside. They started getting into position and got an attack on the creatures. One of the monsters cast a spell for Stone Call which caused the room to be filled with falling rocks. The room was filled with dirt and rocks that would impede movement. The group continued moving into position while the newcomers waited for them outside the room. The session ended here.
