34. 'Burn it down, burn it down'

Posted on August 27, 2019January 20, 2024 by Brianna

The session started at the Lord's Gate Citadel. The noble's council was meeting for the vote for the next Lord Mayor of Cillamar. The Patriarch announced the vote and the three candidates stood on the dais as the nobles voted. With the aid of the visits and diplomacy of The Strangers, the vote was for Lady Jolyon Lewis, 13 votes, versus 8 for Count Ismae and 1 for Lord Merrick.

n

As the results of the vote were announce, Kaylord noticed that the Count seemed staggered and pale for a brief second before recovering. The Lady stood and asked Lord Warrick to continue to command the Magn'gard. He agreed. She also asked Lady Paendrogch to stay but Lady Paendrogch said she was traveling with the Patriarch to aid him in the north.Lady Lewis closed the meeting and asked The Strangers to join her in an office to discuss other items. Coravel noticed that Lady Woden looked ready to kill when looking at the group and Lady Lewis as she left the chamber.

n

In the office, The Strangers and Lord Warrick met with Lady Lewis. Lady Lewis asked Lord Warrick to setup patrols of the Magn'gard to check the refugees entering the city at the gates. She also asked Quis'Ari to ask for help from the Temple of Sarenrae and assigned guards to escort the groups in the Warrens in order to avoid attacks. She expressed appreciation for what The Strangers were doing to aid refugees at the Keep and hoped they would continue to provide help. She also asked them to be careful in keeping the peace of Cillamar, that supporters of Count Ismae were ready to take their actions and use them to cause unrest with her rule. She also signed the writs of peace given to the group by the Patriarch as affirmation that The Strangers were still part of the peace keeping for the town.

n

Lord Warrick provided his analysis of the weak points of Cillamar which might be attacked. The Strangers shared information about a possible attack on Erastus 1, so there was consultation on how to defend the city. Lord Warrick said there are four key areas of Cillamar.

n

    n

  1. Lord's Gate Citadel – Home of the Lord Mayor and the Magn'gard, seat of the rule of the city, treasury and court
  2. n

  3. The Gaol – Main location of the Lantern Guard, Lady Woden in charge of this area.
  4. n

  5. The High Gate Tower – An outpost of Lantern Watch led by Lady Ari Belgard, a paladin of Irori. The gate is located in the High Quarter
  6. n

  7. The Rogue's Guild – While not a recognized part of the lawful rule of CIllamar, the Rogue's Guild, with Batard Ost as the leader, has helped to keep things calm in the Warrens and reduce the amount of crime in the city by charging for 'protection' from thieves. Those who support lawful rule would like to see the Guild destroyed and Ost executed but the pragmatic understand that the guild currently serves a useful function for peacekeeping during the current unrest.

With Count Ismae's loss, it is expected that an attack might occur on the Rogue's Guild by Ismae's supporters and the True Men. In addition, Lady Belgard is an unknown so The Strangers decide to visit her to ask her to support the Lady Lewis. The meeting ends.

n

The group decides that they should not visit Lady Belgard openly so they attend a service for Irori in the Magn'gard chapel when she attends. During the service, Kaylord left quietly, while slipping a note to her to meet them at the Slumbering Drake. The group meets there and Lady Chauntess shows them to a private room. Lady Belgard joins them and The Strangers explain about the threats to CIllamr. They also mention their concern that Lady Belgard may be monitored and ask her to help their cause. She states that she will support the lawful rule of Cillamar and leaves after The Strangers share information with her.

n

The next two weeks are uneventful, the temple of Sarenrae visits the Warrens to help the sick and poor while the Magn'gard keep watch for mercenaries attempting to sneak into the city with the refugees. The Strangers patrol Cillamar but do not find anything unusual or out of place during this time. At the dawn of Erastus 1, that changes when a body is discovered in the Rogue's Court in the arms of the statue of Norgorber, god of thievery. The mutilated body was identified as that of Shawn Derry, aide of Lord Stanton. When The Strangers entered the court, Lady Woden and Lantern Watch were investigating the area as people hid in the shadows and behind building around the square. Lord Stanton was summoned while the group confronted Lady Woden. She proclaimed that the Rogue's Guild was responsible. The group signaled to Hugin and other guards for the Rogue's Guild to let Batard know what had happened. He entered the square and proclaimed his innocence. The Lady Woden steadfastly proclaimed that the Rogue's Guild was responsible but The Strangers were able to reduce the tension and prevent a mob from gathering at that point. When Lord Stanton rushed up, accompanied by others of his house, he wept when he saw his friend's body. The body was taken away while Lady Woden glared. After a few tense moments, she and the Lantern Guard left with Lord Stanton.

n

However, rumors circulated Cillamar during the day and by evening a mob gathered in the Rogue's Court, threatening the Rogue's Guild building. The Strangers were summoned and ran towards the disturbance while Lord Warrick said he would keep an eye on the Citadel and protect Lady Lewis. When The Strangers arrived, a mob had gathered and were moving toward the Rogue's Guild, carrying torches and oil.

n

As the group moved towards the square, they were attacked, with magic and weapons. Corval was struck with flame with two fighters approached. Quis'Ari cast a prayer for the party while Kaylord moved into position. The attack continued as a bard started singing and a cleric also cast a prayer for his evil god. The two fighters attacked Coravel while Kaylord prepared for his attacks. The magic user continued to cast his spells, however, once Kaylord and Coravel were flanking their enemies, the battle quickly turned in their favor.

n

During this time, the mob was moving towards the Rogue's Guild, but did not take action. As the final enemy was dispatched, the magic user, Lady Woden and a Lantern Watch Patrol entered the Rogue's Court. While she looked over the scene, her attention shifted to the Guild headquarters. Her entire focus was on the building as she yelled out, 'The Rogue's Guild must be destroyed!”. The session ended here.
